May’s culture day have me a better idea of what this meant to my students (and why they weren’t so excited about April’s). This time there was food, games, toys, contests, etc.
To back it up a little, students have a star page in their notebooks. Everyday they earn a star for attendance, one for bringing all of their books and one for doing their homework. For extra behavioural incentive teachers are allowed to give out additional stars in their classes (I like to give them out as a reward for speaking or giving presentations in front of the class). A couple days before culture day the star pages are collected and the stars are counted. For every ten stars a student received one dollar that they can spend on event day.
